Atlanta Church Pays Off $1.5 Million In Medical Debt

in Atlanta announced it had eliminated $1.5 million in medical debt for more than 1,100 local families. 

• Target Beneficiaries: The relief benefited approximately 1,100 families across Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Henry counties.

• Selection Process: Families did not need to apply; they were randomly selected and notified directly that their qualifying debt had been erased.

• Timing: The announcement was made by Senior Pastor Mark Moore Jr. during a Sunday service on December 21, 2025, as a "faith in action" outreach for the Christmas holiday.

• Additional Outreach: Alongside the debt relief, the church hosted a holiday toy giveaway, distributing over 400 toys to local children.

• Mechanism: While the church provided $1.5 million in face-value relief, such initiatives typically involve purchasing debt for "pennies on the dollar" through specialized nonprofits like Undue Medical Debt, allowing relatively small donations to cancel large sums of debt. 

Spirit and Truth Church is a multisite congregation with campuses in Atlanta and Detroit. Pastor Moore noted the effort was specifically timed to address financial instability caused by rising healthcare costs and the expiration of certain subsidies.
