  • Location: The McDonald’s restaurant on Hanover Street in Martins Ferry, located in Belmont County near the Ohio–West Virginia border.

  • Cause: The female employee was working near the frying station on Monday, December 29, 2025, when one of her wireless earbuds fell into a vat of hot grease. • Treatment: She was transported to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital in West Virginia for specialized treatment. While her injuries were described as significant, officials have not released her name or a current update on her condition as of January 2026.

Context and Safety

The incident sparked widespread discussion online regarding workplace safety protocols and the dangers of using personal electronics like earbuds in high-risk kitchen environments. Safety advocates emphasized that employees should never attempt to retrieve objects from fryers by hand and should instead use proper utensils or shut down the equipment first.
