Two time boxing champion Gervonta Davis is preparing for a chance to win another world title this Saturday, but on Thursday he took a moment to make a huge gesture by offering to cover the funeral costs for a 21-year-old Baltimore woman, Destiny Harrison, who was fatally shot inside her own hair salon over the weekend.
“I’m just hearing about this sadness,” Davis, also a Baltimore native, tweeted on Thursday. “Prayers and love to her family. If I can do anything like pay for the funeral or anything like that..Reach out!”
Harrison was killed, according to reports, when someone walked inside her Madam D Beauty Bar and fired multiple shots in front of her 1-year-old, leaving her with gunshot wounds to the head. She died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
The killing followed an incident earlier this month, according to WMAR, when Harrison filed charges against two neighbors after she caught them stealing merchandise, including $3,000 worth of “expensive hair extensions”; Harrison had said the suspects became violent when confronted. "I'm scared for my life and business," she’d reportedly told authorities.
"It's unbelievable that some evil soul would do something like this," Harrison’s uncle, Dewine McQueen, told WMAR.
Davis, a two-time world champion, initially responded to news of the tragedy with an offer to pay for funeral costs, while an Instagram story he posted later that night appeared to confirm that the funeral payment had been made. Davis’ coach later confirmed the news with WJZ-CBS Baltimore, noting that the story had really touched the boxer.
Harrison’s family has also set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her final expenses. As of Friday, that page had raised more than $18,000. “I was very sad to hear the news of a smart ambitious young mother gunned down in her own business for nothing,” wrote one contributor to the cause. “Sending love from Vallejo, CA. I hope they find the people that did this and karma comes to them.”
