Just a day after players from the Brooklyn Nets donned “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts given to them by Jay Z, the Marcy Projects’ finest met with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to talk justice-system reform.

Jay Z, who is seemingly silent when it comes to his social activism and charity work, caught a bit of flak after posing with the Nets players and not wearing a T-shirt. But many came to Hova’s defense and noted that he does a lot of charity work; he just doesn’t talk about it.

The Daily Kos cited the fact that Jay Z pays tuition for the children of Sean Bell, the man who was killed by New York City police in 2006. The article also stated that Jay Z has also funded people who are on the ground in Ferguson, Mo.

Jay Z’s meeting with Cuomo comes on the heels of a grand jury in New York City deciding not to indict the officer involved in the choking death of Eric Garner. Since that decision was handed down, protests have been held nightly, not only in New York City but across the country.

“Gov. Cuomo and Shawn ‘Jay Z’ Carter had a productive conversation about doing a top-to-bottom review of the criminal-justice system and how we can all work together to pass a reform package that ensures equality in the eyes of the law,” Cuomo Communications Director Melissa DeRosa said in a statement.

Will this meeting between Jay Z and Cuomo result in any changes? Who knows, but if people wanted to see Jay Z make a political and social statement, he gave them what they wanted.
