It was August 11,1973 in the South Bronx, New York, in a housing project at the intersection of Sedgwick Avenue & Cedar Park, who knew the impact of a local back to school party would become so significant world wide.
DJ Kool Herc was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1967, at the age of 11, his family moved to the South Bronx, New York, bringing with him, his "sound system". DJing wasn't anything new, but it was the curation, the style and the way Kool Herc did it, that stood out.
Herc utilized obscure, often, unknown, yet rhythmic and funky records that got the party people on the dance floor. Then he would back spin records once they hit the "bridge" or "break" portion of the record, that had nothing but the music and no vocals. A style of DJing that would be utilized for the B-Boys or "Break" dancers when they take over the dance floor at parties.
A few years would pass and the DJ's would add "emcees" to their crew, who would entertain the party crowd with a "call and response" chant, as well as emcee battling against opposite DJ crews at the party. That inevitably would create what we now know today as the Rapper.
