Nicholas M. Cabral, a 39-year-old resident of Sewell, New Jersey, was arrested in December 2025 for allegedly impersonating a federal law enforcement officer and possessing a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Incident Details
Impersonation: On December 10, 2025, Cabral allegedly reported an open door at a home under construction in Washington Township to local police. When officers arrived, Cabral pulled up in a marked U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) vehicle, wearing a gold badge and identifying himself as a federal officer.
Armed Action: While identifying as an agent, he reportedly drew a handgun and attempted to assist local officers in "clearing" the residence. Although he held a valid New Jersey permit to carry, he was not employed by the DHS or any other law enforcement agency.
Unauthorized Use of Vehicle: Investigations revealed the DHS vehicle belonged to his wife, a legitimate Homeland Security officer who was away on a duty assignment in California at the time. Data from the vehicle showed it had been driven with emergency lights activated and was even used to visit a local Wendy's restaurant while she was away.
Current Status
Charges: Cabral faces charges of fourth-degree impersonation of a law enforcement officer and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Legal Proceedings: After turning himself in on December 11, 2025, he was initially held at the Salem County Jail and later released. His firearm was seized, and his carry permit was revoked.
Upcoming Court Date: As of early 2026, he is scheduled to appear in court on January 22, 2026.
