Radio personality Ebro Darden sparked a viral debate by criticizing the "dance" he claims Charlamagne Tha God and Stephen A. Smith performed to secure massive media deals. Following the cancellation of his long-running show Ebro in the Morning earlier that month, Ebro used his new platform, The Ebro Laura Rosenberg Show, to address Charlamagne's reported $200 million contract extension with iHeartMedia.
Ebro's comments focused on several key points:
The "Dance" for Dollars: Ebro claimed there were things Charlamagne was willing to do that he personally "would have never done" to reach that financial level. He characterized these actions as a "dance" required by major corporations like iHeartMedia or Disney to secure "big bags".
Political Criticism: He specifically targeted Charlamagne’s past criticism of Black women in politics, referencing his initial disapproval of Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign cycle.
Upholding Systems: Ebro argued that he refuses to "propagate white supremacy," an ideology he suggested Charlamagne’s platforming of certain figures or topics has inadvertently supported.
Clarification on Success: Despite the criticism, Ebro later clarified that he wasn't saying people shouldn't celebrate Charlamagne's success or that the deal wasn't good for the podcasting industry, but rather that he wanted people to "pay attention" to the compromises required for such wealth.
Public reaction to Ebro's statements has been mixed, with some fans supporting his stance on integrity, while others—including figures like 50 Cent and Cam Newton—dismissed his comments as "sour grapes" or jealousy following his own show's cancellation.
